2:30– 4:00 PM
Affordable Bordeaux’s – Off the Beaten Track with Margaret Calvet, Co-Owner of
the Aquitaine Wine Company
Would you like to try a wine that tastes similar to a first or second growth Bordeaux, but at a fraction of the price?  Would you like to learn about the up-and-coming producers of the region?  Would you like to know if vintage really matters? Some of the most expensive and prestigious bottles of wine come from the region of Bordeaux.  Yet, such wines represent less than 1% of the production of Bordeaux.  The real value in Bordeaux comes from the vineyards that neighbor the top estates, share the same “terroir,” use the same “famous” winemakers, and yet produce affordable wines.

Join Margaret Calvet, co-owner of the Aquitaine Wine Company in Bordeaux (www.aquitainewine.com), in a tasting of discovery wines from all of the prestigious appellations of Bordeaux.

Joining Margaret will be four female winemakers:
Veronique Barthe, Owner/Winemaker of Chateau La Freynelle
Karin Bernaleau, Owner/Winemaker of Chateau Mongravey
Pascale Peyronie, Owner/Winemaker of Chateau Fonbadet
Carole Saby, Owner of Chateau St. Andre Corbin

For a complete list of bios, click here.

These wines taste (nearly) as good as those 1st and 2nd growth Bordeaux that retail for around $2000. per bottle of wine, but are available at a fraction of the price.  Learn about the up-and-coming producers of the region and whether vintages really matter today.  Connoisseurs of Bordeaux, or novices that know nothing about Bordeaux (and would like to learn), are welcome to participate in what promises to be one of the more popular seminars of the weekend.  This event sold out last year, so reserve early! Price: $25.00

 BWE09_Hobbs 3:00 – 4:00 PM
California, Argentina, and Beyond: A Tasting and Seminar with Paul Hobbs
Winemaking virtuoso Paul Hobbs is a difficult man to track down.  As an owner of two world class wineries and one of the most sought after consulting winemakers in the industry for a number of other incredible producers, you are far more likely to see Paul in an airport than at a Wine Expo!  This is truly a remarkable opportunity to taste wine with one of the most influential winemakers of the last 25 years.

As a winemaker, Paul is highly regarded for his ability to identify exceptional vineyards along with his pioneering, innovative work with new and historical sites and regions.  First hired by Robert Mondavi for his expertise in oak aging, he then joined the Opus One team before moving on to Simi Winery.  In California Paul has consulted for notable producers such as Peter Michael Winery, Fisher Vineyards, Lewis Cellars and others.  One of the most defining moments in Paul’s career was his decision to consult at Catena Zapata in Mendoza in 1989 at the behest of Nicolas Catena.   In conjunction with the Catena family Paul proved that Argentina was capable of producing wines of impeccable pedigree and distinction.  He founded Paul Hobbs Winery in 1991 and Vina Cobos in 1999. Twice named Wine Personality of the Year by Robert Parker, Jr., he continues to be a leading consultant winemaker around the globe.

For this seminar Paul has been generous enough to provide some of his most highly acclaimed and sought after selections from his Russian River Valley and Argentinean winery as well as an additional Argentinean wine he is currently consulting on.  Considering the prices these wines fetch on the open market this is a tremendous chance to luxuriate with a winemaking icon and some of his most prized productions.

The wines to be tasted are:

07 Paul Hobbs Chardonnay, Russian River Valley (SRP $52- 90pts RP)
07 Paul Hobbs Pinot Noir, Lindsay Estate Vineyard, Russian River Valley (SRP $95- 90-93pts RP)

Quinta do Noval Port Seminar Featuring the Rare Nacional
One of the oldest port houses, Quinta do Noval is unique among the very top producers in the Douro in that most of its ports are made from estate-grown fruit. Notably, all of the vintage Noval wines are from the single Quinta do Noval vineyard.  Two additional facets that make Quinta do Noval an exception are its stock of 100% estate, single-vintage tawny ports (“Colheitas”) and, of course, Nacional, the legendary port made from a 6 acre parcel of ungrafted vines.  When declared, only 200-300 cases of Nacional will be made, and instantly become the most sought after port in the world.  Please join us in exploring these three unique facets of Quinta do Noval with Aymeric de Gironde.  Taste several Colheitas that span a range of nearly 60 years, three vintage ports since the revitalization of the Noval estate in the early 1990s and an extremely rare Nacional vintage from the 1960s. Selections include: Quinta do Noval Colheitas 1937, 1964, 1995, Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 1994, 2000, 2007 and Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port 1967.  Price - $60.00

4:00 – 5:00 PM
Portugal and the Rise of Touriga Nacional

Portugal is blessed with many unique, indigenous varieties. Touriga Nacional is the grape of Port wine – dark, rich and unctuous. Many skilled winemakers are working with the Touriga grape to create wines of finesse and complexity. They are Portugal's big reds. Unlike their neighbors Tempranillo, they are not about tannin and a certain hint of leather and stables (not that there is anything wrong with that), but rather, a certain ripeness of the grape, and a texture that spreads out across the palate with a subtle but intense flavor. That said each winemaker has its own interpretation of the varietal and its terroir.  This session is led by Sandy Block, MW.  Price: $25.00

Irreverence and Mischief Four Vines Style- An Indoctrination and Tasting with Chris Tietje
No restraint.  No fear.  That simple credo sums up the winemaking philosophy of Christian Tietje, Four Vines founder and rogue winemaker with an in-your-face passion for big reds.  Originally founded in 1996 as a Zinfandel focused producer, Four Vines has since expanded its range to a number of Rhone and Iberian varietals that thrive in the Paso Robles heat.  In addition to a number of single vineyard Syrahs:  Dusi, Bailey, One Tree Hill, Four Vines Winery has become increasingly well known for their “Freakseries:  Heretic, Anarchy, Peasant, Loco, Phoenix, Monarchy and Cypher.   These powerful, stylish reds showcase the best of terroir-based winemaking, while retaining an eclectic approach.  Giant red wines with outrageous attitude, intriguing blends and unique marketing geared toward Gen X, Gen Y and those Boomers who think they can keep up.   Make no mistake about it: these are very serious wines for people that realize that great wine isnt something that needs to be taken too seriously!  This year, the best of the Rhone winemakers bestowed upon Christian their highest honor, by choosing his wine, the 2006 Four Vines Syrah Santa Barbara Los Alamos Vineyard One Tree Hill Block, as the best Syrah at the 2009 Hospice du Rhone Syrah Shoot Out. Please join Christian for a tasting of some his favorite selections.  Though he is always a high octane performer, Christian really seems to kick it up a notch when given the opportunity to return to his New England roots.  This is not a seminar to be missed!  Price: $30.00
