Tremont 647/Smoke Shop
Chef/Owner Andy Husbands brings over 20 years of experience and a reputation as one of Boston's most celebrated culinary experts to the kitchen at The Smoke Shop, his latest restaurant located in Cambridge, MA. Making its official debut in June 2016, the 150-seat barbecue destination culminates Husbands' continued success as an award-winning pit master and pays homage to his extensive background in the competitive barbecue circuit. The Smoke Shop showcases old school-style barbecue with a modern twist, featuring staples like Pulled Pork, Brisket, Fried Chicken, Hot Links and more.
Long before becoming a top influencer in the Boston food scene, Husbands got his start in the industry at the ripe age of 14 where he spent his time working at a local bakery in his native city of Seattle. He continued to pursue his passion at Johnson & Wales University where he graduated with a degree in Culinary and Hospitality. His career truly began taking shape when he set out on a cross-country journey discovering a new kind of love for food through a variety of experiences like working his at notable San Francisco restaurants and living on a farm in New Mexico.
Husband's later moved onto the city of Boston working as a sous chef at the nationally-reputed East Coast Grill under the helm of Award-Winning Chef and Mentor Chris Schlesinger. In December 1996, he decided to embark on his own venture by opening neighborhood bistro Tremont647 and later, Sister Sorel, where he would further develop his own style of cooking through bold and adventurous flavors.
Husbands' honest and approachable fare has earned him local and national praise from The Boston Globe, Boston Magazine, Wine Spectator, Star Chefs and others. His internationally-recognized BBQ team, IQUE BBQ, became the first New England team to win the World Champions of BBQ Title in 2009 at the famed Jack Daniels WorldChampionship in Tennessee. Husbands has also been acknowledged by the Massachusetts Restaurant Association as the 2014 MRA Chef of the Year. In addition to these accomplishments, he has co-authored several cookbooks including "Burgers", "Wicked Good Barbecue", "Grilled to Perfection" and will be adding a fourth to his impressive lineup that is assuming a spring 2017 release date.
Deeply rooted in the community, Husbands is a large contributor to Share Our Strength, the nation's leading hunger relief organization, as well as an active board member of the Massachusetts Restaurant Association and a Rodman Celebrate Restaurant Chair. In his spare time, Husbands enjoys teaching at Pine Street Inn and spending time with his wife, Rice, at their home in Stoneham.
